Happy New Year! It is that time of the year again and it brings along a sense of cheer and renewal, as life is presented with yet another opportunity for a fresh start - just like a new sheet of paper waiting to be filled with our own life story. Whenever we look back upon the completed pages, especially at the end of each year, part of our life history is made and cannot be erased.
What is our history?
As last year was left behind, have I reflected and asked, "What have I done that others, especially our children, would remember me by?" In other words, was I able to leave behind some form of a legacy? What is a legacy? According to Wikipedia, legacies are what we remember about a person or a country. It is historical, passing on from one period to another and is either positive or negative. The ancient Greeks and Romans voted for their leaders and started the democracy movement. Enid Blyton is a well-known children's author and so is Eric Carle. Steven Spielberg will go down in history as one of the best movie producers, and so will Zhang Yi Mou. What about Adolf Hitler?
We may not be famous, but in our own ways, we can leave a legacy if we pursue a good cause with perseverance. Our Heavenly Father has bestowed on each of us different gifts and talents. Use them wisely and they will be our legacies. Perhaps our children may remember us as - always hospitable, a nature lover, a great cook, a selfless community volunteer, an unyielding advocate for the weak or a voice that constantly guide them on the right path. On the other hand, we may also leave a legacy of destructive habits, unhealthy lifestyles, broken relationships or unfulfilled dreams.
Let us be mindful that as we begin the year, whatever we do now will leave an indelible mark in our life history. Our lifetime is appointed by our Creator, and He has made all things beautiful in His own time, including our lives. So, likewise, let us make our life beautiful and create wonderful legacies for our next generation.
